Air to Air
Refueling onboard RAF Tristar
Air to Air images onboard one of
the nine RAF's Tristar ZD948 KC.1 of 216 Squadron based at RAF Brize
Norton.
The KC1 version has a modified
cabin fitted with a large side-door capable of carrying a mix of up to 160
passengers with baggage or 44 tons of freight over a range of 5,700 miles.
When used as an air-to-air tanker it can carry 136 tons of fuel which can be
passed to receiving aircraft at a transfer rate in excess of 2 tons per
minute.
Sadly the
RAF's Tristar, along with the surviving VC10s,
are due to be replaced under the Future Strategic Tanker Aircraft (FSTA)
program later this decade. It was announced in January 2004 that the Air
Tanker consortium, which was offering Airbus A330 aircraft, had been chosen
as the preferred partner for the FSTA contract.
The whole day was a great
success and what was apparent to me was the professionalism of the crew,
my sincere thanks to the crew for their warm hospitality.
